Implementation

There are thousands of ready-to-use Free and Open Source Software Solutions that only need installation and configuration to make them work. Implementation consists of helping our clients select a ready made and off-the-shelf Open Source tool to solve a particular business need.

Implementation Portfolio

We can work with almost any of the ready-made Open Source Solutions available in the major forges and repositories. Every time we acquire expertise in a particular tool, it enhances our implementation portfolio and we can capitalize on the knowledge gained from it's use. In fact, we don't charge our clients for the learning curve, even if it's the first time we use a particular technology that we feel is the best tool for a new project.

The Open Source Software offering is very broad, so we have focused on specific technologies which are listed here.

Our Applications Portfolio Button is frequently updated as we add new technologies to our toolbox. You can use the RSS feed to keep up to date with our latest additions.

Analysis and Selection

Normally, our implementation services don't require a full-blown consulting service. Instead, we usually perform a short-term assessment to help us select the best tool for the job. We present our recommended solutions with capability matrix to help the client make her selection, or we just recommend one best solution based on our experience.

Selection Criteria

Our selection criteria includes (but not limited to):
  • Specific and focused capabilities for the job at hand.
  • Technology used in the software (languages, design pattern, etc.).
  • History, evolution and maturity of the software.
  • History, evolution and maturity of the community or company behind the project.
  • Adequate support channels and tools: mailing lists, forums, version control.
  • License, terms of the core software, components and dependencies.

Open Source Forges

Free and Open Source Software is scattered all over the Internet. Some projects have their own web sites, and some might be hosted in a remote college server. Nevertheless, most are hosted (or at least listed) in one of three most popular repositories:

Installation and Configuration

After selecting the optimal tool for the job, we download revise and install the product. Our implementations team also makes sure to contact the community or company behind the product by joining the appropriate mailing lists, forums, etc. All the original documentation is studied and the product is configured to the client's specific needs.

Testing, Documentation and Training

Testing is one of our most important activities in any of our services. We employ, manual and/or automated testing techniques to make sure that the application will perform and meet our client's expectations. The next step is to document everything we did and perform complete technology transfer by means of training sessions to the appropriate levels in the client's organizations. From final users to support personnel.
